What is a ‘Flexitarian Diet’?

The word Flexitarian combines the words ‘flexible’ and ‘vegetarian’. It is an eating method focusing on plant-based products while allowing the consumption of animal products in moderation. This diet is meant for people who want to add more plant foods into their diet while still enjoying the occasional meat dish.

This diet is awesome because it has no rules or regulations, unlike a vegan or a vegetarian diet. It all depends on the person. The only goal is to consume more plant-based foods than meat. That’s it!

How can I become a flexitarian?

Our health expert, Tania Koujou, has the simple answer:

  • Eat more veggies.

You should eat more vegetables daily in any way, shape, form, and even color. Vegetables are full of vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants. The more you consume, the healthier you are. Tania herself goes on a vegetarian, sometimes even a vegan diet, 3 days/week to cleanse her body since vegetables are great for gut bacteria. They also aid the body in fighting off illness. Herbal tea as well is great for you and perfect for your stomach.

  • Less processed sugar and candy, more fruits.

Fruits contain fructose which supplies your body with sugar in a natural and stable way. Fructose is stored in the peel of fruits, so it is best to consume fruits whole. While high on fructose, fruits are also full of nutrients and fiber. Make sure to always add a protein source to your fruit snack, such as yogurt or nuts, for a balanced snack.

Although delicious, ‘junk’ food is high in calories and low in nutrients. So don’t cut out candy, soda, and food with added sugar from your life, but you can consume them only once in a while. 

  • Eat the least processed form of food.

You always hear that nutrients are stuck to the peel, and that’s true. Eating whole-grain foods means you eat the healthiest version of food. You should focus on slow carbs which include oats, wheat bread, sweet potatoes, buckwheat, brown rice, and freekeh. Slow carbs don’t cause a spike in your blood sugar and protect the insulin levels in your body. The peel will also satisfy your hunger more healthily and give you an extra dose of fiber.

  • Be flexible with protein.

Protein can come from red meat, white meat, or vegan sources. Tania advises you to mix them up and not consume one type of protein to achieve the perfect balanced diet.

What are the Flexitarian Diet’s health benefits?

This method of eating is beneficial for your heart, your weight, diabetes and may keep cancer at bay.

  • High fiber and healthy fats diets are good for heart health. Antioxidants too play a role in reducing blood pressure and increasing good cholesterol levels.
  • Your waistline will thank you for your new-found diet! Studies have shown that people who rely on a plant-based diet may lose more weight than others.
  • Eating a plant-based healthy diet may help manage and prevent type 2 diabetes because this diet promotes weight loss. After all, plants are high in fiber and low in unhealthy fats and added sugar.
  • You’ve definitely heard of the benefits of cranberries and cranberry juice in the prevention of cancer. Why? Vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts, and whole grains contain antioxidants and nutrients that may help prevent cancer.

The Bottom Line

The Flexitarian Diet’s motto is: “You do you.” You fix your diet according to your liking as long as you consume more plant-based foods than meat-based ones. It is perfect for falling in love with healthy eating again. The lesson here is to take it step by step and not drastically change your eating habits. The more important lesson is to have fun and stay healthy!
