Tips For A Healthy Summer By Tania Koujou

Summer has finally arrived! It’s the best time of the year to feel alive and full of energy. It’s time to whip out that swimwear, grab your picnic basket, and head to the beach for a well-deserved break. For many of us, summer also brings with it temptations of excessive sun exposure, sweet treats (hello ice cream!), hay fever, and other health woes – so it's just as important to look after ourselves in the warmer weather. While working on your summer body and perfect shape, you need to remember that mental health and physical health are largely connected, so by taking care of your body, you’re also taking care of your mind. Here are five things to remember this summer to help you take care of your body and mind and enjoy your holidays guilt-free.

Tip #1 Increase your fluid and fiber intake

Hydrate! Water is a magical cure. Keep your water bottle next to you at all times and drink throughout the day. Drinking water is extremely important as it helps rehydrate your body and helps it function better. Make sure you gulp down 8-10 glasses of water and ensure a well-hydrated body. Do not drink extremely chilled water as it will only wreak havoc on your health.

Water is not only found, well, in water bottles, but you can find it in a great number of fruits and vegetables too. Did you know that a cucumber is 96% made of water? Now you do! Fruits and vegetables are a great source of fiber also. They help your stomach with its digestion and keep you feeling hydrated and satiated. The insoluble fiber in leafy greens helps food to pass through your digestive system, reducing issues like diarrhea, constipation and bloating.

Tip #2 Explore fruit and veggie snacks

Move over fried snacks that you enjoyed during winters; it is time to load up on lighter snack options. Load up on more body cooling foods and more hydrating foods that will help you keep going in this heat. Eat more watermelon, raw cucumber, carrots, apples, apricots, or the fruit of the season! 

Tip #3 Try a green juice or sip on bone broth

Replace your alcoholic or sugary drinks with green smoothies or bone broth once a week. 

Green smoothies have a long list of health benefits attached to them; here are a few:

  • Digestive health.
  • Natural weight loss.
  • Strengthens the immune system.
  • Excellent source of antioxidants.
  • Reduces and combats cravings.
  • Lower risk of chronic disease. 
  • Lower cholesterol.
  • Increased energy.

Tip #4 Do more outdoor exercise & sweat it out 

Exercising outside and sweating more than usual helps release toxins trapped in your body. Exercising outside has been proven to lower your stress levels. Due to the release of anxiety or stress from your system, you will find yourself sleeping better at night. So grab your yoga mat, find a beautiful patch of grass and start with a salute to the sun to thank her for all its help. The sunshine will replenish you with Vitamin D and strengthen your bones while giving you a beautiful golden tan.

Tip #5 Support your liver 

Some leafy greens, fruits, and veggies are loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants keep your liver happy. Your liver is the largest internal organ in your body, and it is responsible for filtering and clearing out toxins from your system. You can make your liver's job easier if you eat the right things, which happen to be: kale, broccoli, asparagus, spinach, beets, banana, and sweet potato.

And finally, don’t forget to wear your sunscreen and have an exciting summer filled with fun activities!
