Everyone wants to use “clean” products nowadays, but what does clean really mean? Holistic Health Coach Clara Chammas will explain everything you need to know about clean beauty products and their impact on your body and mind.
What is clean beauty? And how is it different from natural beauty?
The term “clean beauty” first surfaced in the 1970s with CoverGirl’s “Clean Make-up” campaign, referring to a clean look, a fresh face without makeup. In the 2000s, clean beauty products became popular again after consumers were not completely comfortable with the textures of natural products, but still wanted products free of harmful ingredients.
That’s what clean products are all about. Clean means that a beauty product should be using a nontoxic element as a baseline and plant-based ingredients for active results. They favor natural ingredients yet often incorporate synthetics that have been deemed safe for people and the planet. Clean beauty products are also eco-friendly, sustainable, and cruelty-free.
Clean does not necessarily mean chemical-free. Natural can be clean, but clean is not always natural. Let us explain. Clean beauty products are free of toxic or potentially harmful ingredients but keep in mind these ingredients can be natural or synthetic. Meanwhile, natural or organic beauty products contain “pure” ingredients that are found in nature only. Natural does not mean better. Harvesting natural products to satisfy the huge consumer base is and can wreak havoc on the environment. Also, natural doesn’t always mean safe. Some people throw together a mix of essential oils and call it a day. They forget that some essential oils are extremely potent and using them without any reserve or guidelines will cause more harm than good.
Why is clean beauty important?
You don’t need a huge shelf filled with products to get the best results with your skin care or body care. It is important to understand what you are applying to your face first and foremost. Not all fancy-looking words of ingredients at the back of your products are harmful and scary. Some synthetics are important to the formula to maintain its stability. You should know though that there are no severe restrictions for cosmetics companies to abide by when it comes to creating products. However, in Europe, several ingredients were banned from use in cosmetics because even if you don’t regularly use cosmetics, these small doses add up over time and may cause cancer and other health problems.
