Peanut butter is one of the world’s most popular spreads. It is comprised of about 25% protein, making it an excellent plant-based protein source. Peanuts are low in carbs and suitable for people with type 2 diabetes or those following a low-carb diet. Pure peanut butter is a good source of healthy fats. Although peanut butter is high in many healthy vitamins and minerals, it also contains a substantial amount of calories. Finally, peanut butter is rich in antioxidants.

Coconut oil is widely marketed as a superfood. Coconut oil is high in MCTs, a type of fat that your body metabolizes differently than most other fats. MCTs are responsible for many of the health benefits of coconut oil. Several populations around the world have thrived for generations eating a substantial amount of coconut, and studies show they have good heart health. Research notes that MCTs can increase the number of calories burned over 24 hours by as much as 5%. However, coconut oil itself may not have the same effect. MCTs can significantly reduce appetite, which may lead to reduced body weight over the long term. A few studies have shown that coconut oil can raise blood levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, which is linked to improved metabolic health and a lower risk of heart disease. People can apply coconut oil to their skin, hair, and teeth. Studies suggest it works as a skin moisturizer, protects against skin damage, and improves oral health.

Maple syrup is a popular natural sweetener that is claimed to be healthier and more nutritious than sugar. Maple syrup contains a small number of minerals, such as manganese and zinc. However, it is very high in sugar. Though there are a number of antioxidants in maple syrup, they don’t offset its high dose of sugar. If you consume it, it’s best to do so in moderation — as with all sweeteners.

Studies have shown that both the flavor and aroma of vanilla can offer some health benefits, including calming effects on adults. It can reduce startle reflexes and also provide some relief from sleep apnea, a sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. Because vanilla has fewer calories and carbohydrates than sugar, it can be used to reduce your sugar intake. Using vanilla as a sugar substitute also can reduce high blood glucose levels and help you lead a more heart-healthy lifestyle.
